Spring Sports Information

SPRING ATHLETIC SEASON
Officially begins February 20 with tryouts/mandatory practices and runs through May.


ATHLETIC REQUIREMENTS
  • All students must be officially accepted and enrolled at Hickory Grove Christian School for the 2016-2017 school year in order to participate in any athletic activity, including workouts, tryouts, camps, games, etc. 
  • All students must have a current, completed physical form on file with the Athletic Trainer in order to participate in any athletic activity, including workouts, tryouts, camps, games, etc. Athletic physical forms can be downloaded from the Athletics page of the school website. 
  • All students must submit the forms listed below to the coach on the first day of tryouts. These forms will be reviewed and filed by the Athletic Trainer. All forms are available on the Athletics page of the school website. 
    • Athletic Physical Form 
    • Athletic Medical Forms Packet 
      • HGCS Emergency Medical Treatment Authorization 
      • Student-Athlete & Parent/Legal Custodian Concussion Statement 
      • CHS Release for Student Athletics 
      • CHS Request for Treatment and Authorization 
    • Athletic Participation Agreement 
  • The player’s fee for the 2016-2017 school year is $95 for Middle School and JV teams and $105 for Varsity teams. (This fee no longer includes the player’s “Spirit Pack,” which will be separately available for purchase online through BSN Sports.) Athletes participating in multiple sports throughout the school year may be eligible for a 50% discount for the player’s fee applied to the second and third sport once the player’s fee for the first sport has been paid in full. The player’s fee for the spring season must be turned in to your team’s coach before the first game/meet of the season. Any student-athlete who has not turned in their player’s fee will not be allowed to participate in any games until the outstanding balance has been paid.

ACADEMIC ELIGIBILITY
High School
Academic Coaching is provided for students who have 2 or more D's or 1 or more F's at the mid or end of quarter grade check. Students in Academic Coaching will be assigned an academic coach, who will be available to meet with students at least once per week. Students will also be required to attend SMART lunch sessions with the teacher of each class in which they have a D or an F. Students will be given a form with which to plan and track their own attendance. Students who miss SMART Lunch sessions will be given an after-school detention. At the mid or end of quarter grade check, grades will be reviewed to determine if a student needs to remain in Academic Coaching.

Grades will be checked according to the following schedule: 
Athletic EligibilityAny student athlete who is placed into the Academic Coaching program will fall into one of these three categories: 
End of Course Policy:
Student-athletes must pass all core classes, including any foreign language being taken, to be eligible to participate in summer workouts and any fall sport tryout. If a student-athlete does not pass a core class, he/she must complete remediation with a passing grade to become eligible to participate in summer workouts and any fall sport tryout.
Student-athletes who do not pass a first semester core class will be athletically ineligible and placed on academic coaching until the next grade check. He/she can become eligible again during the second semester once released from academic coaching; however, the athlete will be required to complete remediation for the failed class to be eligible to participate in summer workouts and any fall sport tryout the following school year.
Middle School
End of Year Policy:
Student-athletes must pass all core classes to be eligible to participate in summer workouts and any fall sport tryout. If a student-athlete does not pass a core class, he/she must complete remediation with a passing grade to become eligible to participate in summer workouts and any fall sport tryout.

SPIRIT PACKS
Due to the reduction in players’ fees, Spirit Packs for each team will no longer be included in the player’s fee. Each team will set up a “team shop” through BSN Sports (www.bsnteamsports.com) for parents to order required and/or optional items and team gear for their student athletes. Coaches will give out specific information about their team’s online shop at the beginning of the season.


PARENT INVOLVEMENT
  • Join the AAA Booster Club to support Academics, Arts, and Athletics at HGCS. AAA Booster Club members will receive free admission to all athletic events (excluding MAC and NCISAA Tournament games). 
  • Volunteer to help out with admissions and/or concessions at any of our athletic events. The link to an online sign-up sheet for volunteers will be emailed out as we get closer to the spring season.

SPRING SPORTS TRYOUTS

VARSITY BASEBALL:
  • Mandatory practice will begin Monday, February 20, 3:00-5:00pm 
  • Baseball field on campus 
  • Practice on Tuesday, February 21 and Wednesday, February 22 will be 4:00-5:30pm, but will return to normal time (3:30-5:30pm) on Thursday, February 23 
MS BASEBALL:
  • Tuesday, February 21, 2:45-4:00pm 
  • Wednesday, February 22, 2:45-4:00pm 
  • Tryouts will be at the baseball field on campus 
  • Regular practice beginning Thursday, February 23 will be at the HGBC Recreation Complex in Mint Hill (shuttle transportation will be provided from campus to the complex, leaving immediately after school (must be on the bus by 2:45); parents must pick up their student-athletes at the complex after practice—transportation will NOT be provided back to campus) 
VARSITY SOFTBALL:
  • Mandatory practice will begin Monday, February 20, 3:00-5:00pm 
  • Softball field on campus
MS SOFTBALL:
  • Tuesday, February 21, 3:00-5:15pm 
  • Wednesday, February 22, 3:00-5:00pm 
  • HGBC Recreation Complex in Mint Hill (shuttle transportation will be provided from campus to the complex, leaving immediately after school (must be on the bus by 2:45); parents must pick up their student-athletes at the complex after tryouts/practice—transportation will NOT be provided back to campus) 
  • Voluntary workouts will be held on Wednesdays leading up to tryouts after school until 4:15 at the softball field on campus.
VARSITY WOMEN’S SOCCER:
  • Monday, February 20, 2:45-4:30pm 
  • Tuesday, February 21, 2:45-4:30pm 
  • Soccer field/practice field on campus 
MS GIRLS’ SOCCER:
  • Tuesday, February 21, 2:45-4:30pm 
  • Wednesday, February 22, 2:45-4:30pm 
  • Soccer field/practice field on campus 
VARISTY MEN’S TENNIS:
  • Tuesday, February 21, 2:30-4:45pm 
  • Thursday, February 23, 2:30-4:45pm 
  • Practice courts on campus (Latin American Campus parking lot)
VARSITY MEN’S GOLF:
  • Tuesday, February 21, 3:30-6:00pm

  • Pine Lake Country Club (shuttle transportation will be provided from campus to Pine Lake, leaving immediately after school) 
VARSITY TRACK:
  • Tuesday, February 21, 3:00-4:30pm 
  • Thursday, February 23, 3:00-4:30pm (CHANGED FROM WEDNESDAY, FEBRUARY 22)
  • Football field/track on campus 
  • Must have a towel or yoga mat, an exercise band with soft handles, and a watch.
  • Voluntary pre-season conditioning will be held every Tuesday and Thursday beginning February 7 leading up to tryouts from 2:45 to 4:15 on campus. Athletes must have a current physical on file with the Athletic Trainer to participate. Athletes must bring a towel or yoga mat and an exercise band with soft handles to workouts.
