Summer Workouts & Fall Sports Tryouts

School is almost over and summer is nearly here! The Athletic Department will still be going strong over the summer with voluntary workouts for several teams followed by fall sports tryouts in August.

Students MUST be enrolled at HGCS for the 2017-2018 school year to participate in any workouts, camps, or practices over the summer and to try out for any of our teams. ALL students must submit a current physical form to the Athletic Office or Athletic Trainer before he/she can be eligible to participate in any workouts, camps, or practices. ALL students must submit ALL athletic forms (Athletic Physical Form, Athletic Participation Agreement, Athletic Medical Forms Packet) to the Athletic Office prior to tryouts or to the coach on the first day of tryouts in order to participate in tryouts for any team. All athletic forms are available for download on the athletic page of the school website (HGChristian.org/Athletics).

There will be a Fall Sports Informational Meeting for all students and parents interested in fall sports at HGCS on Thursday, July 20th at 6:30pm in room 3012 (Education Center Basement). Please plan to attend this meeting to learn more about expectations, forms, fees, eligibility, participation requirements, tryouts, schedules, etc.

Weekly Announcements - May 22, 2017

Varsity Softball State Champions!
On Friday, the Lions defeated Wake Christian 5-3 and Wesleyan Christian 18-1 in the state semifinals to advance to the championship game on Saturday. The ladies defeated Metrolina 5-0 to become the 2017 NCISAA 3A State Champions! Congratulations to our Varsity Softball team!

Varsity Track NCISAA Meet
On Friday, Makayla Smith ran in the 100M & 200M preliminary races, and Matthew Hobbs ran in the 200M & 400M prelims. Imani Riddick-Cherry ran the 400M in the prelims on Friday, setting another personal record with a time of 1:01.86. She then moved on to the finals on Saturday. She did well against a very strong group of girls, finishing 7th overall with a time of 1:02:11Daniel Similton ran the 800M on Saturday and finished 16th overall with a time of 2:09:12Lauren Burke also ran the 800M on Saturday and finished 6th overall with yet another new personal record of 2:26:45

Football Workouts

CHS Heart of a Champion
Save the date for this year's Heart of a Champion event with Carolinas Healthcare System! HGCS will participate in the event on June 3rd. This event serves as a FREE sports physical and heart screening, and it is available for student-athletes in grades 9-12. Participants must register online at CarolinasHealthCare.org/Heart-of-a-Champion by May 28th. ALL participants must ride the bus from HGCS to the event site--parents may NOT drop off students at the event site. CHS will be releasing our school's arrival and screening time soon.

An informational meeting for parents and students regarding Fall 2017 athletics at HGCS will be held on Thursday, July 20th at 6:30pm in Gyms A & B.

Beginning this school year, the Athletic Department will no longer use Schedule Star. We are currently transitioning to Google Calendar for our athletic schedule. This will allow our schedule to be more compatible with our school's academic calendar and website, and it will be more mobile-friendly for our students and parents. To access the athletic schedule, please visit the Athletics page of the school website and click on the "Athletics Calendar" link on the left side of the page. On this page, you will see the Athletic Events Calendar at the top. This calendar will show all sports teams, meetings, and Athletic Department events by default. To narrow this down to specific teams, click on the drop-down menu arrow in the top right corner of the calendar and check or uncheck whichever teams you prefer. Additionally, there is a Practice Calendar below the Athletic Events Calendar on the same page. This calendar will show scheduled practice times for all teams by default, but can also be narrowed down to specific teams. You can add either of these calendars from the website to your own personal calendar on your computer or mobile device by clicking "+GoogleCalendar" at the bottom of the calendar. You can view additional details about each game/event, such as start/end times, locations, dismissal times, etc., by clicking on the game/event title.

Sign Up for Remind Notifications

Softball State Tournament Game Tuesday
HGCS Varsity Softball will host a second round state tournament game on Tuesday, May 16 against Providence Day at 5:30pm. Admission for the game is determined by the NCISAA and will be $7 for adults, $5 for students, and free for children 8 and under. Booster Club passes are not accepted at NCISAA tournament games.

Varsity Softball State Tournament Game Tuesday

The Varsity Softball team received the #2 seed for the state tournament and a bye in the first round! We will host a second round game next Tuesday, May 16th against either Providence Day or Cary Academy. The start time of the game will be either 4:30 or 5:30 depending on the opponent.

Off-Season Conditioning Workouts
The HGCS Athletic Department is offering off-season conditioning workouts for ALL athletes grades 6th-12th not involved in a spring sport.
Coach Pondo has coordinated and led these workouts for the last ten years and is BFS certified. Workouts will start January 3, 2017, Monday through Thursday each week in the field house after school until 5:00p.m. The program he follows is the nationally recognized “Bigger, Faster, Stronger (BFS)” program. This program is used by most high schools and small colleges/universities in the country. It is a great program for ALL athletes in all sports. Athletes must have a current physical on file with Athletic Trainer in order to participate.
The off-season is the time for you to improve as an individual. It is our hope that ALL will take advantage of this program. This program is free of charge, convenient, and it WORKS!

To access the athletic schedule, please visit the Athletics page of the school website and click on the "Athletics Calendar" link on the left side of the page. On this page, you will see the Athletic Events Calendar at the top. This calendar will show all sports teams, meetings, and Athletic Department events by default. To narrow this down to specific teams, click on the drop-down menu arrow in the top right corner of the calendar and check or uncheck whichever teams you prefer. Additionally, there is a Practice Calendar below the Athletic Events Calendar on the same page. This calendar will show scheduled practice times for all teams by default, but can also be narrowed down to specific teams. You can add either of these calendars from the website to your own personal calendar on your computer or mobile device by clicking "+GoogleCalendar" at the bottom of the calendar. You can view additional details about each game/event, such as start/end times, locations, dismissal times, etc., by clicking on the game/event title.

Sign Up for Remind Notifications
Notifications about athletic event cancellations, changes, and reminders are sent out via text through Remind. You must sign up with Remind to receive these text notifications on your phone. To sign up with Remind, text @hgcslions to the number 81010.
